Trust is built or lost in the moments when an employee raises something inconvenient, sensitive, or difficult to resolve. Psychological safety means employees trust that they can raise concerns, acknowledge mistakes, ask for help, and speak up without being dismissed, or feeling disproportionately penalized. For HR, LGBTQ+ employee experiences can reveal just how strong or fragile that trust really is. What happens when an employee reports repeated misgendering? A manager dismisses an identity-related concern as not workplace relevant? Confidentiality is breached during a coming-out or workplace transition process?
